Flycatchers, antbirds, and frogmouths are among the many birds that feed on the millions of insects living among the trees or crawling over the forest floor. Birds feeding on insects in the air, fly in swift darting movements to catch their prey. Others, like the woodpeckers, remove insects from the wood using their strong bills, curved claws, and stiff tail feathers. The tawny frogmouth, a nocturnal bird, has a large mouth which it uses to eat primarily insects and small vertebrates. When disturbed, it assumes a frozen position resembling the jagged end of a broken branch.
